Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between consulting, coaching, counseling and therapy?

It depends on who you ask. For me, there is merely a difference of emphasis. As a therapist/counselor, I would tend to focus more on a person's feeling process and not necessarily expect results as soon. As a humanistic therapist, I find very little difference in values or purpose between coaching and therapy; they are both focussed on the whole person and his or her potential rather than the why's and wherefores of the past.

The important thing for me is how I contract with a client to begin with. What are the client's needs, expectations, wishes? What kind of help does s/he want? I will then adjust my approach to offer the service the client is asking for. If I feel s/he can benefit by additional services, either through me or elsewhere, I will make suggestions.

Generally, I trust that people who find me have already heard or read about who I am and how I work which is why they are contacting me rather than someone else!

2. How do you structure your fees?

I negotiate my fees with each type of client (individual, couple, conference center, business, etc) according to information about what a person at my level of experience would ordinarily be paid and also what the client can afford. I do not make money the main determinant of whether I work with someone or not. Sometimes, the client has a budget and I let them know what I am willing to do within that budget.

3. You do so many different things. How can you possibly have the time or energy for all of them?

I am semi-retired. I accept only clients and projects which excite and interest me and can usually intuit when I am heading toward Overwhelm and am able to change what I am doing. Because I love what I do, I am usually energized, not drained. I help others achieve this type of balance in their own lives.

4. Are you willing to travel outside your local area (Massachusetts) to work?

Not if it involves extensive driving or air travel; I prefer local gigs. I expect to have any administrative necessities such as organizing the work group, finding housing, doing registration (in the case of workshops), et al taken care of by someone at the site so I can concentrate on the design and implementation of the work.

5. What kind of opportunities are you currently most interested in attracting?

My current main interest is in training people who work with people to learn how to use symbolic arts tools and psychology models to enhance what they are already doing in their classrooms, training programs, coaching, etc. All "people professionals" can benefit, not only in their work with their clients but also in the application of these tools to their own personal and professional development. I am also taking these training opportunities into the virtual reality known as
Second Life. See Projects link.
